How long can you wear a topper?
When it comes to the longevity or lifespan of your hairpiece, there are a few factors to consider:
1. What fiber it’s made of
Synthetic fibers tend to break down quicker whereas human hair lasts a lot longer. Here’s what you can expect from each fiber:
Human hair/synthetic blend
6-12 months
Regular synthetic
3-6 months
Heat friendly synthetic
3 months
Human hair
12 months
2. How often it’s worn
The lifespans mentioned are averages for everyday wear. If you only wear your hairpiece on occasion or you have multiple toppers in rotation, they can last well over a year.
3. How you take care of it
Use care & styling products made for the fiber your hairpiece is made of
Cleanse and condition every 6-8 wears to remove sweat, oils and product build-up
Gently comb out tangles on synthetic fiber using a wide tooth comb and detangling spray
Steam out frizz on synthetic pieces using a wig steamer
Deep condition human hair using Beautimark’s Intensive Recovery Conditioner when it starts to feel dry and brittle
If you’re wondering how many hours in a day you can wear your hairpiece or if you have to take it off before you hit the hay, here’s what you need to know:
You should remove your topper before hopping in bed because it will prevent damage to your bio hair from tension caused by the clips. Does that mean you have to? The short answer is no, but we recommend considering a professionally bonded topper if you’d like to sleep with it on more than the rare occasion.
You don’t need to take your topper off throughout the day. Once it’s attached comfortably, it’s designed to be worn all day. If you feel any discomfort from the clips, remove it and reattach. It’s important to make sure that you’re clipping to a sufficient amount of biological hair and that you’re not causing unnecessary tension that could cause additional hair loss.
